Winter Solstice Ritual

Saturday night was the longest night of the year here in Melbourne, Australia - also known as the Winter Solstice or Yule in the Pagan Wheel of the Year calendar.

I love the significance of the Winter Solstice -
The sacred pause.
The liminal space between death and rebirth.
The return of the sun and the light.

It’s such a potent time for creating ritual - something I love doing. Celebrating, releasing, manifesting, tuning in to our inner wisdom.

The veil is thin at this time and so we have easier access to insights, messages and divine wisdom, as long as we allow ourselves to sit in stillness and listen.

In ancient times, the Winter Solstice was a time of celebration. The days would now be getting longer, the return of the light and sun was upon us - something to celebrate with reverence. Many ancient cultures celebrated with fire rituals, ceremonies and festivals - honouring the Sun gods and goddesses of light.

It was the end of one cycle, and beginning of the next. A beautiful reminder of the continuous cycle of growth and renewal.

On the longest night of the year, my husband and I decided to do our own little ritual to celebrate the turn of the wheel and I wanted to share our ritual with you in case you wanted to try something similar.

The energy of winter solstice is the same as the new moon, so you can use this ritual any time throughout the year when it is a new moon. (There’s a new moon coming up this week!)
